Huawei issues definitive statement about espionage fears: ‘we have never been asked to provide access to our technology’

Would Huawei spy for the Chinese government? That's a question that cost the telecom equipment provider plenty of money last year. After the US government said the company posed a national security risk, Huawei was forced to take its networking business elsewhere. Huawei has repeatedly denied the charges, but today it's issuing perhaps the most definitive denial yet. The company says it has never even been asked to spy on anyone.

Twitter the latest tech company looking to play tax avoidance shell game

Two weeks after its billion-dollar IPO, we learn that Twitter is poised to take advantage of the same international tax loopholes as other large firms like Apple, Google, and Amazon. Citing Twitter Ireland documents, Valleywag reports that the company has all the requisite parts for the “Double Irish and Dutch Sandwich” — a scheme that can minimize a company’s tax exposure by enabling it to lease its intellectual property to foreign subsidiaries. The idea is to turn foreign profits into tax-free revenues, and everything from the existence of Irish shell companies to their Cayman Islands home base give ample insight into Twitter’s strategy.

Microsoft says Windows Phone Remote Desktop app will join iOS and Android counterparts

Yesterday, Microsoft released Remote Desktop apps for iOS and Android that let smartphone users control their Windows PCs on the go, but there was no Windows Phone version in sight. Fortunately, it's something the company is working quickly to fix. According to The Next Web, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that a Remote Desktop app for Windows Phone was in the works, though there's no specific timeframe for that launch yet. “Remote desktop on phones is a relatively rare usage scenario,” the statement reads. “That said, we are working on a version of the app for Windows Phone. We'll be able to share timeframe at a later point in time.” It's still a little surprising to see Microsoft's own OS play second fiddle to iOS and Android, but…

Elon Musk bought James Bond’s submarine car and wants to make it transform

Elon Musk doesn't get buyer's remorse, he just gets new plans. Musk confirmed to CNN Money that he has in fact purchased James Bond's transformable submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me — unfortunately, while the car apparently still works as a submarine, it neither drives nor transforms. “I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform,” Musk tells CNN Money in a statement. But he doesn't plan to leave it as just a prop: “What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.” Of course, Musk is no stranger to making high-tech toys and science fiction a reality, so making Bond's iconic Lotus Esprit actually transform should be well within his abilities.
